Day 12
Nothing planned for the morning today so we had as nice a lie in as we could manage before the construction work started
As I lay there I could hear a tapping sound
What the bloody hell was that?
It went on and on so eventually I got up and found the the air conditioner was dripping water - luckily narrowly missing our souvenirs
When I reported it at reception on the way to breakfast they sent someone who fixed it immediately and then the hotel left some biscuits for us to make up for the inconvenience
It was no bottle of wine but a lovely gesture
Also, yesterday when Joss asked for an omelette for breakfast with fried potatoes she was told there was no potato
So today, even though she didn’t ask for potatoes they gave it to her anyway to make up for yesterday
Nice
Then we went out as it is market day in Buenos Aires
We went to 2 separate markets and there was quite the array of goods on sale
We then got a bit tired as it was nearly 28 degrees so we stopped for a couple of Tranki’s
Very nice and the waitress was keen to practice her English on us
2 guys then sat next to us on a higher table watching the football (Milan Juventus) over/through us
They were nice enough but I didn’t appreciate the intrusion so we went somewhere else for a small lunch and a Patagonia beer
I say small but I’ve not had a small portion yet so I had to leave some
We then came back to room before our evening excursion
Which was the Fogon Asada Experience
To you and I , this meant Argentinian grilling, mostly of meat
The night consisted of a 9 course “tasting experience” along with 4 wines:
Course 1: Ember roasted egg plant, ricotta cheese with fresh herbs
I’d give this 6/10 as the cheese was a bit too plentiful and strong for me
Wine 1: Chardonnay - this was delicious and Joss said she wasn’t a fan of Chardonnay as she sucked down her second glass… 7/10
We started talking to the 2 ladies to our right at this point - French/Canadian but their English was excellent
The American couple to their right tried to take them away from us as best friends but they looked like Trump supporters so that was never going to work….
Course 2: Ironed Provoleta cheese , grilled fruit in a Torrontes reduction
This was basically a toasted cheese flan with pear on the top - delicious
I’d give it 8/10
Course 3 : Molleja, roasted tomatoes and ginger sauce
Don’t let the Spanish fool you - it was liver, but surprisingly nice 7/10
Wine 2: This was a Merlot - lovely 8/10
Course 4: I won’t give the full Spanish for it but it was basically pork sausage on a bit of bread and black pudding on the same - I preferred the first 7/10
Then we were given a bigger knife as the meat was coming….
Course 5: Slow braised asada Al papillote - I reckon I could have eaten it through a straw - absolutely delicious 10/10
Course 6: Pork flank Steak, yellow Chili sauce and lime and cilantro salad
Possibly the saltiest meat I’ve ever tasted 1/10
Wine 3: Malbec - fucking amazing 10/10
Course 7: Pine Cone Smoked ribeye cap, creamy cauliflower purée, flame roasted corn - just so good 10/10
Course 8: Ribeye steak - the first part was amazing 10/10 then they gave us more on the bone and seemingly poured salt all over it 1/10
Wine 4: Dessert wine - yuk
Course 9: pancake with dulce de leche, Patagonian berries and whipped cream - so, so good 10/10
It was a fantastic evening and the chefs were all so accomplished and accommodating
Afterwards we hit the town to say farewell to a fantastic holiday
Before finally toddling off home like the oldies that we are
It’s been a great 2 weeks that will live long in the memory
